The Education Department supports the Mission Statement in the belief that education is the cornerstone of excellence. To that end, the Education Department assists in providing competent staff to deliver quality patient care and competent staff to all other departments that act in a support role to patient care areas.

SCOPE OF SERVICES:

ORIENTATION OF STAFF

All personnel attend a two-day general orientation before assuming duties in their assigned area. Components of include an introduction to the Hilton Head Regional Medical Center, human resources, payroll issues, performance improvement, body mechanics, the elements of the environment of care, risk management, infection control/bloodborne pathogens and Target 100.

On Day #3 of hire, non-nursing personnel report to their specified area to begin a unit-based orientation. Nursing personnel attend a two-day general nursing orientation. Components include the philosophy of the Department of Nursing, overview of pharmacy services and laboratory services, documentation issues, wound care, abuse issues, patient rights, pastoral care, dealing with difficult patients, restraint policies and procedures, IV/IVAC skills, code training and cart review, pain management, and Rally training. On Day #5, nursing personnel begin their unit-based orientation in their specified area.

BASIC CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT (BLS)

The CPR (BLS) program follows current standards of the American Heart Association (AHA). New BLS certification is offered four times per year and recertification is offered once per month by qualified staff with AHA BLS Instructor status.

ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT (ACLS)

The ACLS program follows current standards of the AHA. ACLS is offered two times per year or as needed for new certification and two times per year or as needed for recertification. ACLS classes are held jointly with Hilton Head Island Fire and Rescue utilizing personnel and equipment from both entities.

ORDER COMMUNICATION (O.C.) TRAINING

O.C. Training is held during orientation for new staff required to utilize the AS400 system for order entry, inquiry or charge posting. (See O.C. Manual.)

UNIT-BASED IN-SERVICES/CONTINUING EDUCATION

Unit-based in-services and education are encouraged and the Education Department assists as requested or needed. The sponsoring department forwards the documentation for the in-services to the Education Department who maintains documentation of content, attendance, and evaluation of events.

CARDIAC DYSRHYTHMIA PROGRAM (CDP)

The CDP is a 31 contact hour program held as needed to train RNs, LPNs, CNAs and other staff in recognition, interpretation, and treatment of cardiac dysrhythmias according to their job descriptions and responsibilities. Requirements for successful completion include attendance of 80% of the classes and a score of 74% on the final exam.

CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION

Hilton Head Regional Medical Center holds provisional provider status for CME presentations through the South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA). CME presentations meet all Essentials set forth by the SCMA. The Professional Education Committee oversees the CME process and the Education Department acts as a member of this committee. Grand Rounds presentations are held on the first Tuesday of every month from 7:30 am - 8:30 am in the Board Room and on the following Tuesdays from 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm in the Bethea Education Center of the LaMotte Building. Meals are provided for staff members attending these presentations. Attendance is open to all physicians and health professionals at Hilton Head Regional Medical Center. CME presentations to physician groups outside the facility are coordinated by the Education Department following the SCMA Essentials.

ATTENDANCE SYSTEM

The Education Department maintains original sign-in sheets for three years and enters attendance in a computerized database for any events it is involved in (General Orientation, Nursing Orientation, Safety Orientation, continuing education program, BLS, ACLS, CME events, etc.)

RESOURCE ASSISTANCE

Assistance is provided to all departments as requested in identifying the educational needs of staff as well as possible resources available to meet those needs.

Tenet Healthcare has developed this initiative to improve managerial practices, reduce turnover, and build a culture that values its employees. Through customized learning modules, directors, managers, and supervisors are exposed to concepts essential to key leadership areas.

AUDIO-VISUAL SERVICES

Audiovisual equipment is the responsibility of the Education Department and is available to all departments upon request with availability assigned on a first come - first serve basis.

COMMITTEE PARTICIPATION

The Education Department takes an active role in the organization and participates in leadership functions by committee involvement.
Participation includes but is not limited to the JCAHO Task Force, Department Specific Plans, Nursing Leadership, Professional Education Committee, and Target 100.
