Jellyfish Stings

Tips for Dealing With Jellyfish Stings

Summertime means beach fun. It also means jellyfish season on Hilton Head Island beaches.

These aquatic invertebrates are equipped with nemocysts which are spring-loaded venom glands. When the jellyfish's tentacles come in contact with something, the nemocysts "sting" whatever they are in contact with. If the object in question is a person, the sting results in skin irritation and discomfort. You also may want to read our guide on dealing with ocean-related injuries.
